Daffern, Albert

Consists of negatives of ranch work and family life on the Matador Ranch (1910). Albert Daffern worked as a wrangler and cowboy for the Matador Division of the Matador Land and Cattle Company during the early 1900s. L. J. (Charlie) Fullingham served as camp manager on one of the division's line camps.

Daingerfield, Texas, in south central Morris County, was first settled in 1840. Since 1876, the town has served as county seat to this agricultural, timber, and mining area of northeast Texas.

Photo of Braniff International Airways Plane at the Lubbock International Airport. Former Lubbock photographer who donated entire print collection to the SWC. This collection contains 162,994 leaves. Jim Dallas owned a photography studio in Lubbock, Texas from the 1940s through the 1960s. His work concentrated on studio portraits, but included some cityscapes and copies of historical photographs.

Davis Mountains (Texas)

Consists of photographs of the Davis Mountains, the Indian Lodge in Davis Mountain State Park (1927), and the McDonald Observatory (undated).
The Davis Mountains lie in the region of West Texas between the Pecos River and the Rio Grande in Jeff Davis County and are characterized by high volcanic peaks. For many years the mountains were home to the Mescalero Apaches until their defeat in the early 1880s. In 1934, the creation of Davis Mountain State Park made this scenic area a popular vacation spot.

A. B. Davis, Jr., son of former Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Manager, A. B. Davis, was a professional photographer who specialized in the West Texas oil industry and recording events for Texas Tech.

Portraits of Linda and her husband Les at their ranch in New Mexico. Mrs. Davis grew up in the ranch country east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Cimarron. Her family and that of her husband, Les Davis, had ranched in the area for a few generations. She is actively involved in operating the ranch as well as supporting various organizations related to ranching and New Mexico history. She is a Golden Spur Award recipient, following in the footsteps of her father, who was the first recipient.

Born in McGregor, Texas, in 1900, Roy B. Davis moved to Lubbock with his family in 1921. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1927 and, over the next ten years, was a county agricultural agent in Gaines, Terry, and Hale counties. In 1943, Davis became general manager of the Plains Cooperative Oil Mill in Lubbock, in which position he served until his retirement in 1971.

The families of Florencio de la Garza and his son Jose have been prominent in civic affairs in Del Rio, Texas, throughout the twentieth century.

This artificial collection of photographs from Deaf Smith County, Texas (1898-1972) bulks with photographs of Hereford street scenes and businesses (1900-1915). It also contains photographs of an excursion train (undated) and a tank baptism.
Deaf Smith County, in the Texas Panhandle, was organized in 1876; and the city of Hereford serves as the county seat. Located on the Santa Fe Railroad near the original headquarters of the XIT ranch, Hereford is a shipping center for local stock raisers.

DeLoach, William Green

Consists of photographs of the DeLoach family and their activities in Lamb County, Texas (1909-1965). The DeLoach family moved from Oklahoma to Crosby County, Texas, in 1913 and, in 1925, moved to Lamb County, where they farmed. For fifty years DeLoach kept a daily diary that documented the development of West Texas from the horse and buggy days to the space age.

The collection consists of photographs of Desdemona, Texas, and bulks with photographs of the oil boom in Desdemona (ca. 1920). It also includes a tank baptism and an unidentified peanut farm in Eastland County, Texas.
Located in southeastern Eastland County, Desdemona was originally settled in 1860. In September 1918, the Joe Duke discovery well created an oil boom that saw Desdemona covered with a sea of oil
rigs--the Desdemona field was drilled by numerous small operators. Crowded conditions led to increased lawlessness and by 1920, the Texas Rangers had to intervene to re-establish order. Oil production quickly

Bryan B. Dillard, son of newspaper owner J. J. Dillard, was born in August 1903 in Lubbock, Texas. In 1928, he married Baybell Stovall. Dillard became an attorney and later entered partnership with his father in the law firm of Dillard and Dillard.

He was also involved in horse-raising. His son Bill operated a riding stable near San Angelo. Josiah Dyches was his grandfather, and Gertrude Dyches was his sister.

It also contains photographs of Colonel Charles E. (Chuck) Yeager (1948) and an ice house with delivery trucks in front (vehicles, ca. 1920).
Dyess Air Force Base, established in 1956 at Abilene, Texas, is an operations center for the Strategic Air Command. It is located on the site of Camp Berkley and Tye Army Airfield, a World War II training facility. Early pilots trained in the P-47 fighter; and, since 1956, B-47, B-52, and B-1B bombers, C-130 transports, and KC5 tankers have been used extensively.
