Images detail aviation of small passenger planes with aerial shots. Also includes photographs of parties, meetings, and conferences of the International Organization of Women Pilots. The IOWP, or "99s," was founded in 1929 for the mutual support of women aviators and the advancement of aviation. The Lubbock, chapter was formed in 1972, with eleven members among whom were housewives, businesswomen, teachers and nurses. Their principle goal is to encourage members to remain proficient in flying and acquire advanced ratings.

Irion County, Texas

Consists of photographs of Irion County, Texas (1890-1960), and bulks with photographs of residents (1900-1915). The collection also contains photographs of tornado damage (1915); freight wagons (undated); the first passenger train through Mertzon (1910); jewelry drummers from Dallas, Texas (1911); a report card from a Sherwood, Texas, school (1893) and a chuck wagon scene (undated).

Formerly part of Tom Green County, Irion County was organized in 1899 on 1,073 square miles along the Middle Concho River. The rolling West Texas land supports extensive livestock-raising, primarily with sheep and goats. The arrival of the Kansas City, Mexico, and Orient Railroad, from San Angelo in 1910, opened the area for further settlement. Mertzon is the county seat and commercial center.

Itasca, Texas

Consists of photographs of buildings and people related to the cotton manufacturing industries in Itasca, Texas (1912-1915; 1936; 1970), and bulks with photographs of the textile industry in Itasca (1970).

Itasca, founded in 1881, is a retail shipping point in the northern Hill Country of Texas. Its major industry is cotton manufacturing with several oil and textile mills. The Itasca Cotton Manufacturing Company opened in 1901 to produce textiles for draperies and upholstery. In 1935 a Weaver's Guild was established which marketed goods through retail and mail order until its dissolution in 1971.
