Ragsdale, MacArthur Carter

Consists of photographs of members of the M. C. Ragsdale family (1889-1959) and bulks with family photographs (1900-1910).

Born in South Carolina, M .C. Ragsdale came to Texas in 1868. He soon became an itinerant photographer, traveling through West Texas armed with a rifle and a camera. In 1875, he opened a studio at Fort Concho from which he continued to portray frontier life on film. Ragsdale sold his studio in 1915 and many of his negative plates were destroyed by his successors. His son, Henry, was a prominent businessman in San Angelo for many years.

Consists of railroad photographs (1870) and contains the photo of the Northern Pacific Railroad's first locomotive, The Minnetonka (1870), two railroad maps of the proposed and existing railroad lines in West Texas (undated), and the Sweetwater Line (undated).

Rainwater, Edward

Collection details Edward Rainwater’s tour of duty in Korea with many photos of men in military uniforms posing by artillery. Also include a group photo in front of the Colored Church of Christ and a portrait of a boy.

Edward Rainwater is a native of the Lubbock area. Born in Posey, Texas, he soon moved to the Dunbar area of Lubbock, where he currently resides. He served in the military as an artillery sergeant in Korea in the early 1950s.

The image is of the Klink and Taylor Feedlot, located somewhere in Texas. It has cattle scattered in fenced pastures.

The cattle industry has been a long-standing tradition in Texas. Ranching began with the open range until fencing was introduced. Cattle feedlots were a way for ranchers to produce and feed cattle in mass quantity to meet the demands of the consumers.

Ranching letterheads from the following ranches: Nave-McCord Cattle Company, Western Land and Live Stock Company, J. M. Daugherty and Co., Idlewilde Hereford Ranch, Alabama and Texas Cattle Co., C. C. Slaughter, Kentucky Cattle Raising Company, T-Anchor Ranch, C B Live Stock Company, and The Llano Live Stock Co. Photographs and negatives were removed from the Reference File of the T-Anchor Ranch.

This is an unidentified set of images detailing family portraits, ranch activities, rodeo activities, and scenic travel shots. Images show cattle, branding, ranch homes, coyote hunting, horses, bronco busting, cowboys, cowgirls, buffaloes, rodeos, chuck wagons and eating on the range. Some are post cards.

It is uncertain who the family and cowboys are depicted in the photographs. From the late 1870s, the South Plains especially in Texas was occupied by ranchers with vast amounts of land and their cowhands. Ranch activities included fencing, branding, roundups, and herding.

The Ranching Heritage Center formally opened in 1976 as part of the museum at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Dedicated to preserving the ranching history of Texas, the center contains over 20 original ranch buildings moved from historic ranches throughout Texas.

Randolph Air Force Base, Texas

Consists of photographs of Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas (1929-1933), and includes prints of Charles Lindbergh at Randolph Field and scenic views of Austin and Corpus Christi.

Randolph Field was constructed as the primary flight training installation for the Army Air Corps in 1928. Located in San Antonio, Texas, the original buildings used a Spanish-mission style of architecture. The field opened for training in 1931 and continues as a part of the Air Force's Air Training Command.

Ranger, Texas

Is comprised of photographs of a baseball team, a school building, a baptism, street scenes, architecture, groups of people; oil wells, derricks; McClesky Oil well; and Merriman Cemetery.

Ranger, Texas, located in northeastern Eastland County, derived its name from the Texas Rangers who in the 1870s camped about two miles northeast of Ranger on a prong of Palo Pinto creek. In 1917 William Knox Gordon, vice-president of the Texas and Pacific Coal and Oil Company, began testing for oil. The McClesky No. 1 reached a daily production of 1,700 barrels and began a mammoth oil boom that drastically changed Ranger and Eastland County. By 1921 the boom was spent. After the depression Ranger’s economy was based on sheep and goat ranching, and the cultivation of peanuts, cotton, and sweet potatoes.

This collection consists of photographs of individuals, building structures, and oil rigging equipment on Main Street of Ranger, Texas looking west. Ranger, Texas was at one time an oil rich area. Just after the turn of the 20th century, town life became very active. Small towns rose out of nowhere when oil was discovered in Texas.

Rankin, located in western Texas, is the county seat of Upton County. The economy is based on oil and ranching.

Robert E. Rankin taught school in Midland, Texas, during the 1890s. He married Annie May Scharbauer of the Scharbauer Cattle Company family and later raised Herefords in the Permian Basin area.

Ransom Canyon, Texas

This collection consists of various photographs taken at Ransom Canyon, Texas concerning its dedication for a Texas Historical Marker on September 24, 1994.

Ransom Canyon is located twelve miles east of Lubbock in southeast Lubbock County and near Buffalo Springs Lake began as a development site in the 1960’s. Incorporated in December 1977, the area has seen a population growth due to its lovely scenic view off the eastern Caprock Canyon.

Ransom Canyon lies 12 miles east of Lubbock, Texas on the North fork of the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Yellow House Canyon. Headquarters of the Johnston Ranch were located here. In the mid-1960s, the canyon was turned into a residential development project.

Also included are two panoramic images of Clarendon High School and Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. C. W. Ratliff was a reporter and photographer for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

C. W. Ratliff was a 1927 Texas Tech graduate. He began working for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in 1925 as a journalist specializing in political and city hall reporting. Years later he became news director for KCBD-TV in Lubbock.

C. W. Ratliff was a reporter and photographer for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. He also served as director of news and public affairs for KCBD radio and television in Lubbock, Texas.

Dennis Ratliff grew up in Decatur, Texas, and studied law at Cumberland University in Tennessee. In 1921, he formed a law partnership with his father, Judge L. D. Ratliff, in Haskell, Texas. He also served in the Texas state legislature in 1930 and 1932 and, in 1935, was appointed District Judge.

The collection also contains photographs of a right-hand drive Oldsmobile (1914), Crowell, Texas, National Guard (ca. 1910), Foard County officers (1912), and the Crowell Knights Templar Easter Service (ca. 1910).

P. S. Ray came to Foard County, Texas, from Kentucky in 1884. His family farmed and operated the post office at Ragland, Texas. A son, John S. Ray, served two terms as sheriff of Foard County and later became county clerk.

Sterling Price Field and his wife, Dora, farmed in Wise County, Texas. His son, Walter William Field, came to Shallowater, Texas, in the early 1900s. His daughter is Beth Reed.

Consists of photographs of the Elmer Reed family (1910-1960) and contains photographs of Elmer Reed working as an undercover agent dressed as a woman (1930).

Elmer J. Reed, born in 1902 in Wise County, Texas, was the son of Henry Marion and Mary Ollie Reed from Bridgeport, Texas. His father started a successful ice plant and soda pop business and also raised cattle. In 1917, Reed moved to Crosby County where he was appointed deputy sheriff and in 1924, married Julia Mae Carter. He became the youngest man ever elected sheriff of Crosby County in 1926. Reed later served as Deputy U. S. Marshall and as Chief U. S. Probation and Parole Officer.

Reese Air Force Base

Collection is comprised of images of pilots and personnel from Reese Air Force Base which began operations near Lubbock, Texas in 1941. Includes building construction (1940s), aircraft, aerial views, training, sports competition, ceremonies, and community service activities.

Construction of the Lubbock, Texas Army Air School (Reese Air Force Base) began in 1941. Training of aviation cadets began on February 25, 1942. The base was renamed for 1st Lieutenant Augustus F. Reese, Jr. who graduated from nearby Shallowater in 1935, and Texas Technological College in 1939 with a degree in civil engineering. Reese was killed during a volunteer flying mission over North Africa in 1943. During World II, the base trained more than 7000 pilots. The air base was closed in the Fall of 1997 due to federal government budget cuts.

This collection consists of historical and administrative photos. The bulk of the collection is Officers Wives’ Club and Enlisted Wives’ Club, but there are many materials related to Wing Histories and air shows at the base.

Reese Air Force Base, situated on 2000 acres and located 10 miles west of Lubbock, Texas, was named after 1st Lt. Augustus Frank Reese, Jr., a pilot from Shallowater, Texas. He was killed in a bombing raid in Italy 14 May 1943. Reese was previously named the Air Corps Advanced Flying School and the Lubbock Army Air Field until it changed to Reese Air Force Base 1 September 1949. Its history extends from 1941-1997 and after 56 years of training pilots the base was forced to close due to federal budget cuts on military expenses.

Reeves, Frank

Reeves was interested in photography throughout his life. Many of his photos appeared in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. His entire collection is housed in the Southwest Collection.

Reyna, Romeo

Collection contains images by and of Lubbock, Texas artist Romeo Reyna and tapestries commissioned for the Bob Hope Cultural Center in Palm Springs, California and other locations. Bulks with images of Reyna installing tapestries.

Romeo Reyna was born in the Rio Grande Valley in 1935, attended the Chicago Art Institute, Los Angeles Art Center, and the Otis Art Institute. Reyna is known internationally for his large tapestries which are hand woven on upright American Indian looms.

Reynolds and Matthews Family

Consists of photographs of the Reynolds Long X Ranch located near Kent, Texas (1896-1948; 1960), and bulks with photographs of ranch activities (1896-1915).

W. D. Reynolds and his brothers established the Long X Ranch on property in Jeff Davis and Hartley Counties, Texas, in 1882. The Reynolds Land and Cattle Company ran over 14,000 head of cattle on the ranch during the 1880s and 1890s. By the 1930s, the company had expanded to sheep raising and continued to run about 20,000 cattle out of its headquarters at Kent, Texas.

Reynolds X Ranch

This collection consists of photographs of groups of people, cowboys, tents, baseball, ranching activities, and buffalo.

In 1895 George Thomas and William David Reynolds acquired 232,000 acres of land in Jeff Davis County, Texas on which they established the Kent Ranch that used the Long X brand. Additional purchases brought their holdings in the area to approximately 330,000 acres. In 1902 the name of the partnership was changed to the Reynolds Cattle Company. Over the years the cattle company became widely known and respected for its efforts in range management, the quality of its cattle (Hereford and Angus), and its conservation of native wildlife. Heirs divided the original holdings. The portion containing the original headquarters, seven miles south of Interstate 10 on northern Jeff Davis County, continues to operate as the Long X Ranch and uses the same for its brand.

Consists of one image of the Fort Chadbourne barracks in northeastern Coke County, Texas established in 1859. Fort Chadbourne was established in 1859 in northeastern Coke County, Texas as part of a string of forts to protect frontier settlements from Indian attack.

Riera, Juan L.

The photograph depicts Gaston Hall residences participating in activities on the campus of Texas Tech University. Juan Riera is practicing some rope tricks in the foreground. Behind the activities is the Biology building and the construction of Carpenter-Well Apartments. The Carpenter-Wells Apartments were an entirely new complex of housing for Texas Tech students to live in better dorms and in roomy comfort. Also includes photos detailing a fire that gutted the old structure of the First Baptist Church in Floydada, Texas on March 12, 2000 approximately 4:30 p.m. The photos were taken by Juan Riera on March 13. The First Baptist Church is the largest building in Floydada. For hours the structure smoldered and it was finally leveled to the ground. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Juan Riera is a graduate student in the History department and was a graduate assistant in the Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech University. He is currently a part-time instructor at the History department. Riera is originally from Miami, Florida where his parents reside. His specialty is Spanish Colonial history.

These photos were taken between Brownfield Highway and the Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, Texas. Also details Juan Riera’s travels around West Texas interviewing and picking up collections. Images include a roadside photos of West Texas, the Froy Salinas Collection, the Salinas Home in Tahoka, Texas. Also details the dedication of the Texas Historical Marker for the Old Surratt Territory in Cochran County, Texas. Images show people gathered around the historical marker and on the adjacent Aday Ranch. Also featured is a restored building on that ranch.

Juan L. Riera is a doctoral student in the History Department. Riera is originally from Miami, Florida, where his parents reside. His specialty is Spanish Colonial history.

Rio Frio, Texas

Consists of photographs of Rio Frio, Texas (1880-1920), and bulks with photographs of residents of Rio Frio (1900-1910). The collection also includes photos of a tricycle (undated) and the Rio Frio baseball team (1904).

Organized in 1890, Rio Frio is located in southeastern Real County of Texas. By 1900, the town numbered eighty people, most of them engaged in livestock production. Growth in Rio Frio ceased by 1910.

Many photographs are from newspaper clippings.

Also includes scrapbook material and photos of oil and pipeline equipment, boomtowns, oilfield fires, gushers, storage and laboratories. Other subjects are wartime production and companies including Murphy Deisel, Healdton and Magnolia.

Born in Coke County, Texas, Carl Rister taught for many years at Simmons College in Abilene, Texas, and at the University of Oklahoma. He became a prominent historian of the Western United States. His best known work was Oil! Titan of the Southwest. Rister came to Texas Tech in 1951 and was influential in establishing the Southwest Collection.

The Rudolfo Ritz family immigrated to Mexico from Germany in the 19th century. Ritz was an engineer. He left Mexico for the United States during the Mexican Revolution and married his wife, Francis. Betty Ritz is the daughter-in-law of Francis Ritz. The Ritz family is from Meadow, Texas.

The collection also contains photos of the Matthews and Reynolds families, Chief Johnson (undated), Confederate soldiers (undated), and former slaves who lived in Albany, Texas, after emancipation.

Roberts County, Texas

Consists of photographs of residents and businesses in Roberts County, Texas (1880-1966). These include Dust Bowl photographs (1935), Crimean War veterans (undated), and photographs of maps showing Josiah Gregg's and Captain R. B. Marcy's routes across the Texas Panhandle (1840-1849).

Roberts County covers 892 square miles along the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle. Organized in 1889, the county consists largely of ranch land served by the Santa Fe Railroad. The population is currently around 1,100 with the county seat at Miami. The first postmaster for Miami was appointed in 1887, and a tin building on Main Street was used as the post office. On February 19, 1966, a new post office was dedicated by U. S. Congressman Walter Rogers at the corner of Wichita and Main Streets. The railroad reached Miami in 1887.

N. Jack Roberts owned a real estate and abstract company in Crowell, Texas. His father, J. C. Roberts, a Confederate veteran, served as the first county judge of Foard County, Texas. The elder Roberts and his sons also owned and edited the Foard County News.

Robertson, William J. T.

William J. T. Robertson served as a Texas Ranger, patrolling the border between the U. S. and Mexico during the 1930s and 1940s. From 1952 to 1966, he supervised the bracero program for the U. S. Department of Labor.

Robinson was a professor and interim-dean of the College of Architecture at Texas Tech University. He was a native of Buffalo, Wyoming.

Is comprised of photographs copied from the Centennial Reminiscence magazine. Rockwall, Texas is the county seat of Rockwall County. Many residents are employed in the Dallas metropolitan area. Varied manufacturing and hospital services form the economic basis.

Consists of photographs of Rockwall County, Texas (1883-1940), and bulks with photographs of people and places in Rockwall County, Texas (1900). These include an interior photo of the Masonic Lodge (1914); an exterior view of the Rockwall School (1900); and a group photo of the "Dude Drill" (1900).

Rockwall County is located on 147 square miles in north central Texas. It was organized in 1873, when the settlement of Rockwall and the surrounding area split off from Kaufman County. Rockwall serves as county seat to a population of 27,000 in a region that is rapidly becoming part of the greater Dallas metropolitan area.

Rodeos

Consists of photographs of rodeo events, arenas, and personalities in Texas (1949-1971).

"Rodeo" comes from a Spanish word meaning "roundup," and most of the events in modern rodeo have their origins in tasks performed during cattle roundups on the open range. Professional rodeos operate through two associations -- the Rodeo Association of America in Salinas, California, and the National Rodeo Association in Canadian, Texas. The first professional rodeo was held at Canadian in 1888. The oldest indoor rodeo is still conducted annually in Fort Worth, Texas.

This collection consists of photographs relating to the duties of the Office of the Mayor between 1966 and 1970. W. D. "Dub" Rogers, Jr. was a local businessman and television station owner in Lubbock. He owned and operated KDUB-TV, now KLBK-TV, which was the first television station to operate in a medium-sized market. Rogers also served as Mayor of Lubbock from 1966 to 1970.

This collection consists of images from a meeting of the Lubbock City Council. W. D. "Dub" Rogers, Jr. was a local businessman and television station owner in Lubbock. He owned and operated KDUB-TV, now KLBK-TV, which was the first television station to operate in a medium sized market. Rogers also served as Mayor of Lubbock from 1966 to 1977.

This collection consists of one photograph of Will Rogers standing by his pet "Big Jim", a cow. On the bottom of the photo it is labeled as the Dallas Centennial, 1936.

Will Rogers was born at Oologah, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) on November 4, 1879. He worked and performed in many stage successes, becoming one of the great stars of the Ziegfeld productions. Beginning in 1918, he appeared in several motion pictures that mainly focused on a brand of satiric humor. He also wrote a wide variety of articles and books. Rogers was killed with Wiley Post in an airplane accident near Point Barrow, Alaska on August 15, 1935.

National Airport, JFK gravesite and U.S. Capitol, plus military photos in the Philippines. Local subjects are family portraits, dance socials and Lubbock (Texas) Supper Club.

Tom Rollins, a native of Whitharral, Texas, was a graduate of Texas Tech. Born in July 28, 1924, Tom Rollins’ family was originally from Hollis, Oklahoma. They moved to Whitharral in 1932. During World War II, he served his duty in the Navy for 35 months. After graduating from Texas Tech, he spent his career in the insurance business. He retired in 1993. Tom and his wife, Nelda, are active in various civic and University support groups.

Ropesville Rural Resettlement Project (Texas)

Consists of photographs of Ropesville, Texas (1925; 1935), and bulks with photographs of the Ropesville Rural Resettlement Project (1935). The collection also includes a photograph of a Ropesville school bus (1925).

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration dispensed federal funds to establish rural rehabilitation communities for farmers who had been displaced by the Depression and to encourage the development of self-sustaining farm families. The Ropesville Project in Texas proved to be one of the more successful attempts at rural resettlement.

Roscoe, Texas, Boys Club

Includes photographs of the Roscoe, Texas, Boys Club. Roscoe, Texas, located in northwest Nolan County, originated in 1890. In 1907 the town was incorporated and the first city council meeting was held. In 1908 construction began on the Roscoe, Snyder, and Pacific Railway, a fifty-mile line between Roscoe and Fluvanna, Texas that served as a bridge between the Santa Fe and Texas and Pacific railroads. It was one of the most profitable short lines in the nation. Passenger service was discontinued in 1953, but freight service continued into the late 1970s.

Consists of photographs of Roswell, New Mexico (1890-1904).

Located in Chaves County, New Mexico, Roswell was founded in 1891 by Joseph C. Lea. Today, the hamlet that Will Rogers once called "the prettiest little town in the West," is the home of the New Mexico Military Institute and of museums that house collections of Southwestern artist, Peter Hurd, and rocket scientist, Robert H. Goddard. Alfalfa, cotton and oil production support a population of over 40,000. During the 1870s, John Simpson Chisum operated a ranch covering almost 200 miles along the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico.

The International Rotary Club was organized through the efforts of Walter Myrick, Jr. in 1920. It became affiliated with the International Association of Rotary Clubs in 1928, and is one of first men’s service clubs organized in Lubbock, Texas. Rotary International is a service organization that represents business and professional men in fellowship and understanding. They have clubs throughout the United States, which promote and support organizations in their respective communities.

Consists of photographs relating to Helenn Rumpel, family, friends, artwork, workshops, and exhibits. Helenn Johnson Rumpel is an internationally renowned fine art and multi-media artist, lecturer, and teacher based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her mediums include fine art fiber, pottery, penciled drawing and painting. The fiber, stitchery and painting artist has held many solo gallery and museum exhibits.

The Winslow family began ranching in Menard County, Texas, during the 1880s. Edith Winslow married J. Forrest Runge of the Las Moras Ranch near Menardville, Texas.

Consists of photographs of the Louis H. Runge family and Los Moras Ranch in Menard County, Texas, and bulks with photographs of sheep ranching in Texas (1915-1928). The collection also contains photographs of Lyndon Baines Johnson attending an REA meeting in Abilene Texas (1957), the Sheep Rustlers' Parade (1914), and of wool marketing (undated).

Louis H. Runge was part-owner and manger of the 106,000 acre Los Moras Ranch in Menard County, Texas. Originally a sheep ranch, the range was opened to cattle in 1886. Runge's son, J. Forrest, ranched near Christoval, Texas.

Consists of photographs of people and activities in Runnels County, Texas, and bulks with photographs of Ballinger, Texas (1905-1930). The collection also contains photographs of an outhouse, interiors of saloons, mercantile stores (ca. 1905), exteriors of chutes, and photographs of the first saloon in Hallettsville, Texas (1899).

Runnels County, Texas, located on 1060 square miles in West Texas, was created in 1858. Fort Chadbourne was established to protect the early settlers who were mostly ranchers and small farmers. The Santa Fe Railroad built a line through Runnels County in 1886 with a station at Ballinger which quickly made that community the center of business and the county seat. Descendants of German and Czech immigrants are still a substantial part of the county's population.

Rylander, Dorothy

Consists of photographs of people and places in early Lubbock, Texas (1880-1966). These include photos of the Quaker settlement at Estacado, Texas (1888), a cowboy "stag" dance (1900), Marjorie Merriweather Post with her daughter, Dina Merrill (1955), a Friends of the Library book sale, the 1972 ground breaking ceremony for the Mahon library, and a portrait of former Lubbock mayor, Max Tidmore.

Dorothy Rylander received a Master's degree in history from Texas Tech in 1931 and worked as librarian and secretary for the Tech school of engineering until 1946. She served as an administrative assistant to U. S. Representative, George Mahon from 1946 to 1952. Rylander returned to Lubbock, Texas, to work at the museum of Texas Tech until her retirement in 1981.

George Mahon was born in 1900 and grew up in Mitchell County, Texas. He was the first United States Congressman elected from the 19th congressional district, served 22 terms (1934 to 1978) in the House of Representatives, and chaired the Appropriations Committee from 1964 to 1978. Dorothy Rylander worked in Mahon's Washington office from 1946-1952.
