Atchison, Topeka, Santa Fe Railway, Records, 1914-1979

This collection of 26 boxes contains mostly business correspondence with local companies who dealt with the Slaton Division of the San Angelo Branch of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company or ATSF. Many businesses from several small scattered towns throughout the State of Texas had the ATSF deliver or transport commodities such as lumber, grain, petroleum, or chemical products. Only a few files are Station Files, financial documents and printed matter. Of interest is the early business transactions from the 1920s-1940s from these small towns such as San Angelo, Brownwood, Abilene, McCamey, and Lubbock.
Chartered in 1859 as the Atchison and Topeka Railroad Company, it was renamed the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad Company in 1863. It then became the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company in 1893. The system grew to cover the area from Chicago, down to the Gulf Coast, and over to California. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe (ATSF) became part of the Santa Fe Railroad systems, a part of the Santa Fe Industries. The company was active in land colonization, town-site development, and transportation. The collection can be accessed at the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library during opening hours.
