I. Administrative Departments

Academic Affairs, Office of
Presently called the Office of the Provost, the primary responsibilities of the Office of Academic Affairs has included the formulation of all academic policies and procedures, faculty development, and has served as a liaison between the university and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for the development and administration of degree programs and courses.

II. Board of Directors / Board of Regents
On November 22, 1923, the first Board of Directors met in Houston, where they selected Paul Whitfield Horn as Texas Technological College's first president. A list of former and current regents is available on the BOR's official website.

  • S 164.1 Amon G. Carter Papers, 1923-1927: This 2 box collection bulks with business correspondence generated during Amon Carter’s tenure as chairman of the Board of Directors and concentrates entirely on Texas Technological College and Carter’s affiliation with the school. These letters are filed in nine bound volumes and divided into 62 categories. Each volume has a table of contents. In addition, the collection houses an assortment of photographic prints of proposed Texas Technological College building blueprints, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous material.
  • S 339.1 Marshall Clinton Formby Papers, 1883-1989 and undated: This is a 102 box collection.
  • S 356.1 William Thomas Gaston Papers, 1865-1965: This is a 2 box collection.
  • S 1840.1 Harold Hinn Papers, 1954-1984: This 5 box collection includes a large number of files related to Texas Tech departments, correspondence, groundbreakings, and awards.
  • S 449.1 John J. Hinchey Papers, 1948-1981 and undated: This is a 1 box collection.
  • S 1164.1 Chanslor Edmond Weymouth Papers, 1961-1964: This is a 1 wallet collection contains correspondence, brochures, speeches, prospectus and contract relating to the Pan Tech research farm and the Kilgore Beef Cattle Research Center. Also included is one framed, hand-colored portrait of Weymouth.
  • S 1219.1 Floyd Alpheaus Woolridge Papers, 1925-1966: This 2 wallet and 1 scrapbook collection contains correspondence, scrapbook and printed materials, news clippings, and photographs. It bulks (1957-1963) with correspondence pertaining to the activities of the Texas Technological Board of Directors, including the firing of three tenured faculty members. Of special interest are early photos of Texas Technological College and its football team.

  • U 210.2 Chancellor's Office Records, 1973: This 1 wallet collection contains the August 17, 1973 "Progress Report on Transportation Systems Study for Texas Tech University."
  • U 210.3 Chancellor's Office Photograph Collection, 1998 and undated: This collection consists of 3 prints of members of the Board of Regents attending the 75th Anniversary Gala event in 1998; 1 group portrait taken in the courtyard of the Merket Center for the Board of Regents reunion in 1998; and 13 prints of Board of Regents members attending meetings. Pictured include Dolph Briscoe, Robert Brown, Nancy Jones, Joel Kupersmith, Ben Leeah, Carl Noe, Robert Pflugler, the Pharmacy Museum (Amarillo, Tex.), Ann Richards, Dr. David Smith, Governor Preston Smith, Lee Stafford, James Sowell, Alan White, Governor Mark White, and Edward Whiteacre.
  • U 210.4 Chancellor's Office Photograph Collection, undated: This collection consists of 60 prints and 27 negatives of images of Chancellor John T. Montford with various people- Montford and Robert Duncan posing with a flag underneath the portrait of Governor Preston Smith; a commerical photo of the underground Capitol extension in 1993; an autographed portrait of Governor George W. Bush, Montford, and an unidentified man posing with the 1994 Texas USPS stamp; Montford, Bob Bullock, Teel Bivins, and various unidentified men in hunting gear; and Montford and a group of men on a fishing trip.
  • U 210.5 Chancellor's Office Records, 1957-2001: This 41 box collection contains materials related to John T. Montford’s tenure as the first Chancellor of Texas Tech University. Included are numerous artifacts, plaques, and photographs.
  • U 210.6 Chancellor's Office Records, 2002: This 2 box collection contains videotapes, reports and oversized framed images (#893 and #894) regarding the Task Force on Anti-Terrorism and Public Security.
  • U 210.7 Chancellor's Office Records, 1983-2002: This 31 box collection contains various office files, maps, and photographs. The majority of the materials are from the tenure of John T. Montford, the first Chancellor of Texas Tech University.
  • U 210.11 Chancellor's Office Records, 1936-2011 and undated: This 5 box collection includes information on the Arbor Day tradition at Texas Tech, meeting minutes from the Campus Care Givers and the Grounds Beautification, and correspondence to and from John T. Montford. Also includes 915 photographs and 4 VHS recordings.

  • S 1818.1 Chancellor Robert Duncan Artifacts Collection, 1987-2015 and undated: This 31 box collection contains over one hundred artifacts concerning Duncan’s tenure as chancellor for the Texas Tech University System.
  • S 402.7 Kent Hance Papers, 1837-2015: This 7 box collection includes numerous Texas Tech related memorabilia.
  • S 402.1 Kent Hance Papers, 1953-1984: This 214 box collection includes a few files on TTU related to legislative proposals and resolutions. The bulk of the collection pertains to Hance's political career before becoming chancellor at Texas Tech.



IV. Deans of Men, Women and Students

Dean of Men
In a position similar to that of the Dean of Women, the Dean of Men served as a member of the faculty committees on student housing, student employment, convocation, social activities, and sometimes represented these committees in an executive capacity. Male students could seek help in obtaining employment and had to update their employment reports when changes occurred.

Dean of Student Life / Dean of Students
The Dean of Student Life or Dean of Students combined the roles of the Dean of Women and the Dean of Men into one department.

Dean of Women
In the now defunct position of Dean of Women, the individual who held the position served as a member of the faculty committees on student housing, student employment, social activities, and discipline of women, and sometimes represented these committees in an executive capacity. Female students could seek help in obtaining employment and had to update their employment reports when changes occurred.

  • S1146.1 Margaret W. Weeks Papers, 1925-1967: This 2 box collection includes correspondence, biographical data, and a listing of honors and minutes of the Quarterly Club (1932-1957) of Texas Technological College. The collection bulks with six scrapbooks pertaining to Margaret Weeks' career and activities and business related to Texas Technological College. These scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, programs, and other memorabilia, as well as photographs with identification and correspondence.
  • U 57.1 Dean of Women Records, 1928-1957: This 4 box collection contains the records concerning the instruction and behavior of female students of the college. Also included are the scrapbooks of the Association of Women Students, Las Leales Honor Society, and the Freshman Honor Society dating from 1928 through 1957.

V. Executive Vice-President and Provost
The position of Executive Vice-President was eliminated during President Haragan's term. The Provost now fulfills the function of administering all the vice-president positions and reports directly to the president.

  • U 228.1 Executive Vice-President and Provost Records, 1952-1992 and undated: This 94 box collection consists of general records from the office of the President. Included are general correspondence, budgetary information, space committee reports, tenure and promotion files, and faculty reviews.
  • U 228.1 Executive Vice-President and Provost Photograph Collection, 1980-1988 and undated: The collection consists 1 slide, 1 contact sheet, 4 negatives, and 70 prints. Pictured include PATSCU representatives at the 1980 San Antonio meeting; miscellaneous building signs; campus views of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Dr. Fred Bryant being awarded the Agricultural Sciences Outstanding Researcher Award for 1985; grounds maintenance work on campus; hogs; awarding of the Petroleum Grant by Meridian Oil in 1988; recipients of the Top Techsan Awards in 1986; and various telephone poles and lines.

Provost's Office
The Provost's Office serves in the capacity of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The primary responsibilities of the Provost's Office includes formulation of all academic policies and procedures, faculty development, and serving as a liason between the University and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for development and administration of degree programs and courses. The Provost's Office also directs the operation of the libraries, the Division of Extended Learning, the Museum, Ranching Heritage Center, KTXT, KOHM, the Junction Center, International Programs and the University Press.

VI. Financial Records

Auditor's Reports
An independent appraisal function within the University, Internal Auditing examines and evaluates the activities of the University. Its objective is to assist members of the institution in the effective discharge of their responsibilities. To accomplish these goals, Internal Audit will furnish departments and the University’s administration with analyses, appraisals, counsel, recommendations, and information concerning the activities reviewed.

  • U 35.1 Vice-President of Business Affairs Records, 1924-1970: This 29 box and 4 oversize folder collection contains administrative files such as correspondence, reports, legislative requests, and budgetary information. Of particular interest are the extensive files on university facilities and buildings, and numerous files for university councils and committees. Also included are contains 57 prints.
  • U 35.2 Vice President of Business Affairs Records, 1923-1993 and undated: This 28 box collection contains administrative files such as correspondence; reports; legislative requests and budgetary information; questionnaires; space utilization; and various files on different departments at Texas Tech University. Of particular interest are the extensive files on university facilities and buildings, including oversized maps, floor plans, and construction and renovation information
  • S 795.1 Marshall L. Pennington Papers, 1939-1977: This 15 box collection bulks largely with material on budgets, construction, future growth, and personnel for several universities in Texas, and with documents from various associations of college educators and administrators. These include agendas, notes, and minutes of meetings. Also contains correspondence with members of boards, and material relating to Lubbock County Hospital District. A variety of printed materials such as books, directories, blueprints, periodicals, and news clippings are also included.

Also contains various records kept by the Statistics and Reports office. The bulk of the material concerns the Campus Planning Committee and Grover Murray, former president of Texas Tech.

They also bulk with correspondence reflecting Dr. Knapp's work with universities and agricultural extensions, plus minor amounts of photographs, diaries, and scrapbook material.

  • S 461.1 Paul Whitfield Horn Papers, 1908-1932: This 1 box collection contains literary productions, printed materials, photographs, scrapbook material, which contains information on a dinner given for Horn to honor him for meritorious service as superintendent in Houston. The scrapbook includes articles from The Houston Chronicle that were written by Horn from Mexico City documenting his experiences there. The collection bulks (1908-1918) with printed material written by Horn on education. Also of interest are scrapbooks (1916-1932) dealing with current events and interests.

People pictured include May Benton, M. U. Lively, J. S. Machin, Charles Marten, Mrs. Faye Powell Nitcher, Charles Nitcher, C. E. Norman, J. W. Overall, F. W. Plunkett, and first Texas Tech president Paul Whitfield Horn.

  • U 147.14 President's Office Records, 1945-2008 and undated: This 31 box collection consists of administrative files, including information on Affirmative Action initiatives, audit reports, faculty demographics, and information on the development of Rawls Golf Course.

  • U 147.17 President's Office Records, 1923-1948: This 18 box and 1 oversized folder collection contains administrative records concerning the running of the college. Of particular interest is the associated preparatory courses for a pre-flight school in a pre-war, war time, and post-war United States environment. Included is such information as courses taken by pre-flight students and the instructors, and much data about the surrounding environment at Texas Technological College in this late 1930s-mid 1940s timeframe.

  • U 147.19 President's Office Records, 1925-1950: This 12 box collection contains administrative records concerning the running of the college. Of particular interest is the associated preparatory courses for a pre-flight school in a pre-war, war time, and post-war United States environment. Information about veterans and the Veterans Administration is included.
  • U 147.21 President's Office Records, 2006-2008: The 2 box collection consists of administrative records, with the bulk of the contents focusing on intercollegiate athletics.
  • U 147.22 President's Office Records, 1983-2015 and undated: The 12 box collection include information on alumni events and achievements, Board of Regents agendas and meetings, college and departmental strategic plans and reviews, Texas Coordinating Board meetings, Big 12 and NCAA meetings and events, the Junction campus, Texas legislative appropriations and hearings, minority enrollment and recruitment, and President's Advisory Council meetings.   • U 147.26 President's Office Photograph Collection, 1923-1950 and undated: The collection is comprised of 58 photographs and 1 negative. Included are photos of various Texas Tech early administrators (many of these images appear in the First Thirty Years book), military corps marching around campus as well as individual WWII soldiers, group choir portraits and an aerial view of the campus.

  • U 147.41 President's Office Photograph Collection, 1986-1991 and undated: The collection consists of 3 color slides, 92 prints, and 2 transparencies. It includes a variety of images, such as photos of candidates applying to join the President’s Hostesses group; the Playhouse Donation Ceremony (1989); the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship Luncheon (1991); an aerial view; the El Pomar Center in Colorado bid for the Big 12 Conference headquarters (1995); various research facilities; asbestos projects in Tech campus buildings (1993); Operation Senorita (1970); GM competition (1989); Graduation ceremonies (1988); transparencies of charts of all accounts (1980); Sept. Breakfast Club Meeting (1992); the president cutting a basketball hoop at a game (1993); President Lawless presenting Mirabeau B. Lamar medal (1993); a PETA protest sign (1989-90); and various portraits. Terms in office for the various administrations represented in this collection are: Dr. Grover E. Murray (1766-1976), Dr. Cecil Mackey (1976-1979), Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos (1980-1988), Dr. Robert W. Lawless (1989-1996), and interim President Beth Haley (1988).
  • U 147.42 President's Office Records, 1965-1966: This 1 item collection contains a scrapbook donated to the University Archive by David Edward Olsen, who played on the 1962 Picador basketball team for Texas Tech.
  • U 147.42 President's Office Photograph Collection, 1976? The collection consists of 55 slides of Texas Tech University president Lauro F. Cavazos being presented with the presidential plaque to be installed in the sally port of the Administration Building and the reception that follows. People pictured include E. Dale Cluff, Henry Crawford, Robert Lawless, and David Murrah.

  • U 147.44 President's Office Records, 1993-2004: This 32 box collection contains general office files from four presidential administrations - Dr. Robert Lawless, Dr. Donald R. Haragan, Dr. David Schmidly and Dr. Jon Whitmore.
  • U 147.45 President's Office Records, 1984-2004: This 20 box collection includes materials on the formation of student organizations, Texas Tech's affiliation with local area businesses in the area, contact with other Universities, various sporting events, studies done by the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and strategic plans for future projects.
  • U 147.46 President's Office Records, 1989-2001: This 38 box collection contains general office files from three presidential administrations - Dr. Robert Lawless, Dr. Donald R. Haragan, and Dr. David Schmidly. Material addressing construction of the United Spirit Arena and the Marsha Sharp Freeway is also included.
  • U 147.49 President's Office Records, 2002-2008: This 6 box collection consists of office files created and used during the presidency of Jon Whitmore. Included are files on the Board of Regents Audit Committee, the Athletic Council, the President's Administrative Cabinet (P.A.C), and the Texas Tech Foundation.
  • U 147.50 President's Office Records, 2005-2010: This 5 box collection consists of office files from the presidency of Jon Whitmore.
  • U 147.51 President's Office Records, 2007-2014 and undated: This 3 box collection contains general office files from three presidential administrations - Jon Whitmore, Guy Bailey, and Duane Nellis. The collection consists of administrative records, including correspondence, invitations, bereavement letters, and information on campus facilities and planning.
  • U 147.52 President's Office Records, 1969-2017: This 1 wallet collection contains correspondence, memos, work history, congratulatory letters, speeches, photographs and news clippings related to Dr. Haragan's career at Texas Tech as a professor in geosciences and the Honors College and as president of the university.
  • U 147.53 President's Office Records, 1968-2015: This 2 box collection contains reports related to college and departmental achievements and goals, enrollment, academic programs, accreditation, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reviews. Also included are files on Texas Tech's Rattlesnake Canyon property.
  • U 147.54 President's Office Records, 1988-1998: This 1 box collection contains files of the Presidential Advisory Committee's work to fill the presidential vacancy in 1988 that ended with the hiring of Robert Lawless in 1989. Included are news clippings and Lawless' vita and candidate visit itinerary.



IX. Student Affairs

The Division of Student Affairs was responsible for supporting and enriching the educational learning of Texas Tech students and the university's staff and faculty.

  • U 277.2 Student Affairs Records, 1926-1978 and undated: This 2 box collection consists of files on the Code of Student Affairs, correspondence, discipline, Southwest Association of Student Personnel Administrators, dormitories, Texas Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and Traffic and Parking Regulations.
  • U 277.3 Vice-President for Student Affairs Records, 1968-1991: This 2 box collection consists of files on admissions policies for international students, international programs budgets, general information, Immigration and Naturalization Service, international programs, Lubbock International Cultural Center, Rotary Scholarships, and the Study Abroad Program.
  • U 277.4 Vice-President for Student Affairs Records, 1984-2005: This 1 box collection consists of bound reports on the department's goals and objectives.
  • U 277.5 Vice-President for Student Affairs Records, 1931-2010: This 2 box collection consists of publications produced by or collected by the Division of Student Affairs related to student services, academics, and campus life at Texas Tech University dated from 1931-2010.

X. Texas Tech University Foundation

The Texas Tech Foundation was created in 1939 “to stimulate the support of any literary and scientific undertaking, the maintenance of a library, or the promotion of painting, music and fine arts... [and] to see and obtain gifts for the advancement of research and other literary and scientific undertakings....”
